60. Just in Case, by Yuyi Morales

Morales, Y. (2008). Just in case. NY: Roaring Brook Press.

We go on a journey with Señor Calvera, the skeleton from Day of the Dead celebrations.  He is on his way to Grandma Beetle’s birthday party, he is worried. He can't figure out what to give Grandma Beetle for her birthday.  He runs into Zelmiro the Ghost who gives him advise on the gift.  Misunderstanding the advice Señor Calvera decides not to get her one gift, but instead one gift for every letter of the alphabet, just in case. Una Acordéon: An accordion for her to dance to. Bigotes: A mustache because she has none. Cosquillas: Tickles to make her laugh, and so on. In the end, all of his gifts are lost except for his Z gift; Grandpa Zelmiro!  Grandma and all of the children are so glad to see him.

There is a companion book by the same author called Just a Minute.  It is a counting book and has the same characters.  I couldn’t find any resources for just this book, but I found some activities for this book and the Just a Minute book.  It focuses on an author study of Yuyi Morales.
