54. Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos, by Monica Brown

Brown, M. (2017). Frida Kahlo and her animalitos. NY: NorthSouth Books.

This story Chronicles Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s life from her childhood to her rise as a talented painter.  The story recounts Frida's beloved pets—two monkeys, a parrot, three dogs, two turkeys, an eagle, a black cat, and a fawn.  It shows how Frida embodied many wonderful characteristics of each animal into her work.  The story mentions her beloved home, La Casa Azul, where she lives most of her life.  It tells about her illness when she was six and how she was confined to bed, but she put her big imagination to use and began creating art.  When she was eighteen, she was in an accident that made her bedridden for a long time.  She continued to refine her art talent.

Frida Kahlo is remembered for her self-portraits, her dramatic works featuring bold and vibrant colors.  This story contains a lot of figurative language. I found a site with a discussion guide with a lot of ideas about using this book to teach about figurative language.  It also mentions biographies as well.
