53. Chato and the Party Animals, by Gary Soto

Soto, G. (2000). Chato and the party animals.  NY: G.P. Putnam's Sons.

Chato-the coolest cat in the barrio-loves to party.  So, when he learns that Novio Boy has never had a birthday party, Chato decides to throw him a surprise party.  He invites everyone in the neighborhood, cooks up a feast, arranges for music and a pinata, and even orders a special cake.  But when it comes time for the party, he realizes that he forgot the most important thing of all he forgot to invite Novio Boy! All of the party guest searches the neighborhood looking for Novio Boy.  They have no luck finding him and return to the party to morn their missing friend.  Surprise! Guess who shows up? Novio Boy!  He is not dead or lost!

This book is the sequel to the book Chato’s Kitchen.  It has bright, bold artwork and text with Spanish words throughout.   This book has a strong theme of friendship and community.  I found a lesson plan that focuses on teaching these themes.  I found another activity guide that has some good cross curriculum activities and ideas.
