50. Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin

 50. Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin

Litwin, E. (2012). Pete the Cat and his four groovy buttons. NY: Harper.

Pete the Cat is wearing his favorite shirt with the 4 groovy buttons and keeps singing his favorite song even when the buttons pop off one by one. Each “loss” is recorded as a subtraction equation until Pete is left with no buttons. And discovers even though buttons come and go you always have your bellybutton!

The repetition and rhyme in this book are worked in exceptionally well which would make it a fun read aloud.  It includes a bit of beginner math and manages to do this without making it an ‘educational’ book, instead just making it a useful extra to a good story.  I found a cute math lesson about subtraction based on the book.  The link is below.  The second link is from the publishers.  It is a video of the book being read and the song from the book being sung.
