57. Iguanas in the Snow, by Francisco X. Alarcon

Alarcon, F. (2001). Iguanas in the snow. San Francisco, CA: Children's Book Press.

We as readers are invited to celebrate winter, in the magic city of San Francisco.  We see a city where people are bridges to each other. We visit the Mission Dolores. We ride the cable car with Rocking Rafael. We see the sea lions on Pear 39.  A family playing in the snow reminds the poet of the iguanas playing by his grandmother's house in Mexico.  We visit the ancient redwood forests of the Sierras and marvel in their majesty.

This is one of four books of seasonal poetry by poet Francisco X. Alarcon and artist Maya Christina Gonzalez. The other titles are: Laughing Tomatoes and Other Spring Poems, From the Bellybutton of the Moon and Other Summer Poems, and Angels Ride Bikes and Other Fall Poems.  I found a teacher’s guide studying all four books.   It has a section on a poetry workshop, it has vocabulary and comprehension activities.  It also contains lessons across the curriculum including math, science, social studies, and art.
