42.   Tales for Very Picky Eaters, by Josh Schneider

Schneider, J. (2011). Tales for very picky eaters. NY: Clarion.

James is a very picky eater. His dad gets creative in order to get James to eat foods he thinks he doesn't like.  He presents James with crazy scenarios like pre-chewed gum as an alternative to broccoli, and lumpy oatmeal that grows so big it eats the dog.  There supposedly is a troll in the basement that cooks lasagna and not drinking milk will cause squishy bones. Telling these tales is in effort to get James to eat. But it is eventually James himself who discovers that some foods are not so bad, after all, if you're willing to give them a try.

This is an easy-read book appropriate for younger grades. It is the winner of the 2012 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award.  This is an easy-read book appropriate for younger grades. It is the winner of the 2012 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award. It has good illustrations that will keep a young reader interested in hearing the story.  I found a site that suggest using this book to introduce young readers to the tall tale genre.  On this site called The Classroom Bookshelf it has a list of books to use along with this book including Pecos Bill and Paul Bunyan.  This book could also be used to teach about nutrition and why it is important for your body.
