41. Chicken Said “Cluck!” by Judyann Ackerman Grant

 41.    Chicken Said “Cluck!” by Judyann Ackerman Grant

Grant, J.A. (2008). Chicken said, "cluck!". NY: Scholastic.

Chicken wants to help Earl and Pearl plant their pumpkins, but she only manages to get in the way, so they are continually shooing her away.  The pumpkins grow with the care from Earl and Pearl, until grasshoppers invade the pumpkin patch and Chicken is the only one who can stop them. She runs off the grasshoppers and saves the day!

This book for emergent and beginner readers has eye-catching illustrations. It has larger print and a lot of repetitive and rhyming words.  This book is a Theodore Seuss Geisel Honor book winner, so it is for younger audiences. I found a great teacher’s guide at the I Can Read site.  It contains a summary, discussion guide and extension activities.
